Resignation etiquette While this question may have been answered many times, I am new to Gameknot, and online chess playing, and was just wondering when is the polite time to resign a game. There are times when I am in a really strong position, and feel somewhat robbed when I am denied the opportunity to say "MATE". On the other hand, I feel vulnerable when I am on the run and see no way out of my pending doom. I just want to end it all. My… More: chess online

GK Forum v Fritz: Round 1 - Page 3 The old thread was full, so I've moved the last couple of messages into here for continuity: Ccmcacollister: board board #5448348 for your ease of analysis, to avoid a half page of scroll, and so save All our energies for baffline & battling the Evil Fritz, scourge of the boards... *** For anyone interested in Smothered Mates, here is a potential S.Mate I found while looking at a liquidating sequence, following… More: backgammon online

Novice to Expert If you were going to recommend minimum number of books to take a player from novice to expert what would they be? Hmmm... I would recommend -- Terry "Baseline" "How do I lose in chess and why I do it". Great book with a hundred games of the author analysed by himself. Very instructive. Thought not published yet... Hmmm.... or "500 bad games of Chess" I could do that one just as easily. but seriously It is reputed that GM Samuel… More: online chess

d4 defense ok, I know I've posted about this several times now, but I'm really looking for advice. I've pretty much settled on a repetoire for white and for defense against e4, but playing against d4 has given me trouble lately. I was considering playing the Chigorin, but I'm not sure, it seems like it might be a tad too quick for my tastes. I'm the kind of guy that likes the long-term, solid benifits more than immediate momentary ones (though… More: backgammon online

Philidor's defence Long ago i asked opinion about possible alternative openings for Black after 1. e4 Finally, i stood at Philidor's defence, as pretender to try. -- Now it's a question about your opinion about it.... And... it's interesting, how many would like to try it at thematic mini-tournament? Not for actual play in it but to have a readiness (a will)?... I find it to be one of the dullest openings in chess, behind the Queens Gambit… More: chess history

New Cheating Scandal New Cheating Scandal By Dylan Loeb McClain from: Chess Vibes, an Internet chess news Web site, has reported that a player in the Dutch chess league has been banned from playing until the end of the 2009-10 season for using PocketFritz, a hand-held version of the popular computer program Fritz, which is made by Chessbase. This is the latest example of cheating, or apparent cheating, that has cropped… More: correspondence chess

To Win or not to Win? Just curious, a question of temperment?! Would you rather Win a sloppy, double ugly, cheap win OR make a rather brilliant draw ? Nothing at stake, but the game itself. Same opponent. My own choice ... after reflection, surprised me a bit. I find that if my opponent were lower rated, I'd prefer the win. But if significantly higher rated, I'd prefer the brilliant draw. I gurss because then I'd rather have the Game itself to play chess online…

The CHESS SET for you ... HI all, I was wondering if anyone is a Chess Set collector? Or got a special set? And mostly, what do you require in a set to really be pleased with it? ... I would probably be a collector, if I didnt lose so many pawns! Plus the cost and storage might be difficult. A guy here in town had over a hundred sets, and might have been near a literal Ton of books that his estate sold. Then when the Chess House owner died in play chess online…

Better Tactics Book Tactics is my weakest area in chess. I have studied Reonfeld's, "Chess Tactics for Beginners" and found it outstanding for a primer. I have studied in part Alburt's "Tacics for the Tournament Player", Chernev's "Combinations", and Znosko-Borovsky's "Art of Chess Combinations. However, all three are too difficult for me. For those who are familiar with the mentioned books, do you have any suggestions regarding some other book play chess online…

Dropbacks normal? I started playing chess again two months ago. About one and a half month ago I felt that I was improving. I stopped dropping pieces, started seeing some deeper tactics and even began taking strategy into account. When I looked at the board the position looked clear, I could almost immediately see what needed to be calculated and see which were the more important features of the position. But since a week I seem to be back to my play chess online…
