135 ( +1 | -1 ) Uh... no, it isn't too late...If that was your idea of a joke, chessticke, then maybe you should have included a smiley or something after it... Or maybe you truly believe he is too old for chess clubs... *shakes head*.
happinessisawarmgun, I don't believe it is ever too late to join a club. Just look around in your area for one and go to a meeting... you will soon get the feel of whether or not that club is right for you. There are obviously different types of clubs, such as college/university chess clubs and local clubs. Just look for ones that are most compatible with the time you have available and go...
I am an active club member here at the university. We have quite a few members that are not affiliated with the university, but still come to the meetings... and they are also 30 yrs of age or older. Heck, I am not a student here myself (though, I do work here), and I am definitely over 30! There are several that are quite a bit older than me.
All in all, you are never too old... and going to a club will allow you to improve your OTB play significantly, while filling a healthy social aspect of your life that playing online undoubtedly cannot fill.
37 ( +1 | -1 ) happinessisawarmgunI started at age 50, a member of several clubs, organized my own clubs, and often find several regular players older than me at those clubs. I even had a student aged 86. Gave him too much homework, though. We are still speculating on the reasons for his demise.
Zucan, sometimes it is best to ignore certain persons, whose only purpose is to instigate trouble.
37 ( +1 | -1 ) The only club ...In the town I USED to live in had about 10-14 faithful members. The average age (if you dropped me out!) was about 62! These old guys were all retired from serious/rated OTB play, but half of them were former classA+ players! It was a joy to play with and learn from them. I just got really interested myself a year and a half ago (after I turned 30) So no way are you too old! Join up!
21 ( +1 | -1 ) ZucanHey! I am NOT over 30! I am only 28, and I still come to the OU club most of the time. BTW- Are we meeting tonight? When is the downtime for summer, or is there any?
31 ( +1 | -1 ) too old?Don't be daft. I've been a member of two clubs over the last few years. The age range is broad as is the standard. From people who have little experience but still play quite well to people who have been playing since GB lost the thirteen colonies and are still something south of good.
48 ( +1 | -1 ) Responses...chesstickle: Uh, yeah. :) I don't consider myself that wound and do have a sense of humor... but I value helping people as well... yours was just a joke at another's expense with no effort to help, and that was my issue with it.
drgandalf: I agree.
terry_boyer: I wasn't talking about *you* old man... er... uh, never mind (I am older, so...). Yes, we are meeting tonight, and the plan is to continue meeting over the summer... as long as they don't kick us out early like last year!
6 ( +1 | -1 ) thanks everyone...lucky I have a sense of humour too tickler !!.......cheers
13 ( +1 | -1 ) sorry happinessisawarmguni wasn't very helpful. I didn't mean to upset you and the error of my ways has be pointed out to me.
Yes you can shamelessly join a chess club.
13 ( +1 | -1 ) happinessisawarmgun you are much too young to join a chess club.
